Move Over Dannon….

Have you ever noticed the number of yogurt choices we have recently at the grocery store!! It’s enough to make your head spin! Because I am a yogurt lover, I’ve been spending more time in the dairy aisle reading and comparing the new brands and types of yogurt on the market.

I was never one to buy the store brand or off brand of anything while grocery shopping, but lately it’s been a challenge (have you noticed) to stay within any kind of food budget.   So now, it takes me a little longer to shop as I compare labels, ingredients, prices.

My top three new finds for yogurt are as follows:  Rachel’s–found only at Gient Eagle, ArcherFarms–found at Target, and Fage (pronounced fa-yeh) which is Greek strained yogurt at Trader Joe’s.  They all are low fat or fat free.

Rachel’s has the most interesting flavors, like Plum Honey Lavender, this is in the Calm category, and Orange Strawberry Mango, from the Exotic line.  This brand contains Omega-3 DHA and Probiotics along with the active cultures found in yogurt.  The sugar content is just a little higher than I like.  I love the ad that reads on each carton, ” Spoon, savor, stretch sigh..” assuring that eating this yogurt will be a most pleasant experience.  These marketing people do have creative imaginations, don’t they?

Target’s Archer Farms brand is very rich and creamy.  It has gelatin added as an ingredient which boosts the protien up a tad.  Sugar grams are alittle lower, also.  My favorite flavor is Black Cherry. The second ingredient listed is the cherries making it really taste like cherries!

Fage yogurt is pretty new and the consistency is a much thicker, creamier yogurt.  It is strained, meaning most of the liquid is extracted out of it.  Why it is called “Greek Strained Yogurt”  I’m not sure.  Were the Greeks the first to discover that straining gives the yogurt a smoother taste? I beg to differ, because I remember years ago watching a Julia Child cooking episode as she demonstrated how to drain your yogurt over a piece of cheesecloth for several hours to thichen it to make a silky  cream  sauce to serve over chicken.  Anyway, this yogurt is really creamy and good, with the least amount of calories.  I like to buy the plain, non-fat and add a spoon of orange marmalade .  Yummy!

So there you have my review of yogurts….Dannon no longer has the corner on the market.   However, Their Whips will always be one of my favorites! But you should read all the labels to know what you are actually getting.  I’m not quoting prices because every store is different.

Have a yogurt or two a day,  it’s good for your bones!!

There’s More….

After talking with Candace for 25 minutes…..  ( if you’re following me, that translates to a full hour on the phone this morning!) it was determined that the internal wireless card in my laptop is outdated!  Since when is 2 1/2 years considered outdated!  The nerve!  Anyway, after checking with a supervisor who asked if I was “nice”  and understanding about this whole issue, I was told that a service man would come out and replace this wireless card free of charge! This is so that I would not have to go  through a number of unnecessary steps just to start up my computer from standby mode.  Once again, bless you Candace!

Now see, my kindness ( yet another gift of the Holy Spirit) has been rewarded.  *Big Smile*

I still need to pray for patience!

Elevator Music….zzzzzzzzzzzz

I’m on hold as I write this post, waiting for the technical support person to help me with my computer–arghhhh!  I HAD TO DO SOMETHING AS THIS MUSIC IS LULLING ME TO SLEEP!!!!!!

Why do they even call it”elevator music”?  It’s more like “give-me-a-knife-so-I-can-slit-my-wrists-music” Rather than soothing and melodious as i think it’s intention is, I am slowly developing a whopper of a headache.  Go figure!  I must say that I do like a wide range of music genres, jazz, R&B, gospel, some country..but what is sifting into my ears, is far from “easy listening”.  I just want to scream.  After 20 minutes can you blame me?

That’s it! 35 minutes later, I’m done, hanging up, good-bye! I’ll show you!  Click! *Heavy sigh*

Well after all that aggravation, raised blood pressure, dull headache…and still my computer is on the fritz, now what??

Wonder when it will be the best time to call tomorrow??

Looking Through Rose Colored Glasses

When I woke up Sunday morning, after the time change, it seemed later to me because it wasn’t pitch black as it usually is at six-thirty a.m.  I looked out my window and it appeared to me that I had on a pair of rose colored eye glasses.  Now I never owned a pair of rose colored glasses only light blue, which I wear occasionally, but the rosy glow that I saw was mesmerizing and beautiful.  I stood before the window and looked to my left which is the eastern sky and the sunrise was magnificent.  It caused the whole sky to be washed in a playful shade of pink lemonade.

I know why the term “Looking at the world through rose colored glasses” carries such a happy, optimistic view of life’s situations.  I had a smile on my face that not even the toughest elbow grease could remove. I literally felt “joyful” and just knew eveything was right in the world.

Now if only I could capture that feeling and spread it around to those who really need it.  Like my friend, Donna, who is in the midst of chemo treatments for esophageal cancer.  Wow, I just talked with her today and was so sad that the hope and uplifted spirit I saw in her the last few weeks has disappeared, gone, evaporated… Oh, if  she could wake up each morning and sense that feeling of joy and confidence that her day would be pain-free and her strength would return and her dizziness and headaches would be gone! Where can I buy a pair of those magical rose colored glasses?

But she is a fighter and a believer, and she is surrounded by prayer warriors who will hold her arms up for her when she cannot. Her trust in the Lord is what is going to get her through this stormy season, He will be those glasses for her.  Because only He has excellent vision and a plan and a purpose for her and what she is enduring right now. He is a God who heals and keeps all His promises. We, as her friends and church family will remind her of that, while the lenses of her faith become clearer and rosier.

Full Moon and Beautiful Sunset

As I was driving home tonight, my head was swiveling to the left and right back and forth to take in the breathtaking view of both the east and west horizons.  On the west was a most magnificent sunset.  The sky was splashed with an out of control riot of vivid hues.  I’ve never seen such contrasts of colors; pale to medium azure blue, deep to smokey purples, tangerine, garnet, shades of peach streaking and trailing across the western sky. In competition, on the east was the  rising full harvest moon.  It was unusually large and creamy white with an eerie haze like  a misty veil covering it making it look iridescent. The backdrop of the sky was an almost marine blue. I had trouble keeping my eyes on the road.  I wondered if everyone else was being entertained as I was.

The thing about sunsets is that they quickly change and intensify before they melt away into a darkened gray-black sky.  So you have to keep watching and oohing and ahhing . Once again I heard myself say, “Why don’t I have my camera with me!?

I love full moons and I hate that they only occur once a month!  Considering such beautiful visions set before us for our pleasure, how can one deny the existence of God?

Black Raspberries, Summer’s Best

Nothing shouts summer to me more than fresh picked, juicy, still warm from the sun berries.  Doesn’t matter what kind, strawberries, red raspberries, black raspberries, blueberries any kind of berry will do.  My neighbor, Marsha, same name–different spelling, called me yesterday to let me know her black raspberry bushes were ripe for the picken’.    So I dashed over right after my morning coffee with my empty basket ready to reap the harvest of her and her husband’s labor.  Such nice neighbors! !

I had to compete with about 100 buzzing bees, some irritating flies, and branches with very razor-sharp thorns that just attacked me out of nowhere.  Not to mention the rapidly climbing temperature of the already hot and humid morning.  I didn’t mind, all I could think of was the warm, tasty cobbler  that  I would be pulling out of my oven in a few short hours.

Well, I returned with my nearly full basket of glistening, deep purple gems and quite a few bloody scratches on my hands and arms.  I can’t decide on which I will make today,  the cobbler or a shortcake…..mmm, maybe both.   If you mouth is watering, so is mine.   I’m going to have to end now to get started.  I promise a recipe next post.

Triple overtime?!!

“Heeeeee shooots aaaand scooooores!!!!”

What a heart stopper!  Scratch my back with a hacksaw!  You have to be an old diehard Pens fan to agree with that comment.  Talk about a comeback laced with determination, spurts of energy from who knows where, miraculous healings from injuries and all wrapped up in a bow…Christmas is early this year!

I’m a little bleary-eyed from lack of sleep today, three overtimes, unheard of!

But I did have faith that the Pens could pull it off. I’ve watched enough hockey not only the Pens, but high school games while my son played, to know that anything can happen, and it usually does when there are such high stakes involved.  Come on, this is for the Stanley Cup.  Redwings, you’re just gonna have to show up with your A-plus-plus game in the ‘burg tomorrow.

So don’t go to bed Wed. night too early, we all know in Pittsburgh that it ain’t over till Elvis leaves the building!
